Intensive farming on the open prairie.

"Mining the land had provided wealth and prosperity during the 1920s, but it could no longer provide a good harvest during the drought years of the 1930s. The bumper crops and optimism of the 1920s would come to a crashing halt. A new reality of desperation would soon replace the boom time attitude that had existed since the early 1900s. With a drastic reduction in farm income, people either moved out of the province or into the central forest fringe areas to start over again. The settlement experience from 1870 to 1930 had caused Saskatchewan to be transformed into the 'world's granary'. The great depression, 1929 to 1939, was a watershed event in Saskatchewan’s development that brought about similar drastic changes. It signalled the beginning of a new reality for the province."
