John Palliser in middle age.

"Between 1857 and 1860 John Palliser conducted an extensive scientific exploration of the Canadian West for the British Colonial office. During 1857 and 1858 the expedition examined and catalogued the ecosystem of what is now Saskatchewan. While he recommended the parkland area for settlement, he also viewed much of the southern and south-western areas of the province as unsuitable for agriculture. This region became known as the Palliser Triangle and his report would discourage settlement for a number of years. Images and information about this area, and others, can be found in the 'Landscape' section of the thematic menu."
