CONTRACT OPPORTUNITY
JOURNAL EDITOR REQUIRED FOR SASKATCHEWAN HISTORY

The Saskatchewan Archives Board requires a qualified editor for Saskatchewan History, a refereed journal containing scholarly and popular articles and book reviews on provincial history, as well as current news of Saskatchewan Archives and other heritage events. Saskatchewan History is published from the Saskatchewan Archives Board's Saskatoon office twice a year in April and October. Each issue comprises 48 pages in an 8 X 11-inch format. Candidates living in or near Saskatoon and Regina will be given equal consideration.

Responsibilities:

To receive manuscripts offered for publication and to maintain liaison with authors with regard to acceptance or rejection of manuscripts, submission to referees, verification of contents, revision of articles accepted for publication, and proofreading as required.

To assemble articles, photographs and other illustrations, news items and other contents in order to meet required specifications.

To maintain regular liaison with the journal s general manager, its administrative officer, and the Saskatchewan History Advisory Board with regard to editorial matters and publication schedule.

To maintain liaison with the printer of the journal, as determined by the Saskatchewan History Advisory Board, with regard to content, layout and approval of proofs.

To undertake the careful checking of original copy and proofs before submission to the printer.

To meet scheduled deadlines set for publication.

To promote and represent Saskatchewan History as circumstances allow.


Qualifications:

Significant post-secondary education, preferably with a Master's degree in history or a related discipline in the humanities and social sciences.

Significant knowledge of the history of Saskatchewan and current historiographical trends.

Previous experience in editorial work and an understanding of the publication process. A working knowledge of Quark software would be an asset.

Knowledge of word-processing equipment and software and ability to communicate with authors and printers on these applications.

Strong time management and interpersonal skills, along with the ability to work in a team environment and to meet predetermined deadlines.


Terms of Appointment:

Formal contract to be approved upon the recommendation of the Saskatchewan History Advisory Board to the Saskatchewan Archives Board.

Payment of $2,500.00 upon publication of each issue. An additional $500.00 per issue will be added to the contract if the successful candidate has a working knowledge of Quark software.

Provision of stationery and supplies and reimbursement for work-related expenses such as postage and delivery, telephone and fax charges, etc. within the approved budget for the journal.

Reports directly to the general manager of the journal appointed by Saskatchewan Archives Board.
