LEGISLATIVE AMENDMENTS PASSED
12/6/2005
Amendments to The Archives Act, 2004 were passed by the Legislative Assembly on December 1, 2005, and given Royal Assent the following day. The new Act had made significant enhancements in the management of public records and the overall accountability of government institutions and ministers' offices for recorded information created or acquired by them. However, it was noted in initiating new provisions and in preparing Regulations that three areas of the Act required minor change. The amendments do the following: * Clarifies the membership on the Public Records Committee; * Allows for the development of forms of agreement to receive and manage Cabinet records; and * Ensures that public records created and maintained by the Legislative Assembly Services and independent officers of the Legislative Assembly are subject to the Act. Better management of all levels of government will result in greater accountability and efficiency in the handling of public records. It will also ensure that the key records relating to policy and decision-making find their way to the Archives for permanent preservation.
