The Saskatchewan Settlement Experience Goes On-line
7/11/2006
The Saskatchewan Archives Board and the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society are pleased to announce a new partnership initiative that allows people from Saskatchewan and around the world to experience the joys and the sorrows of settlers who arrived in Saskatchewan between 1870 and 1930. The Saskatchewan Settlement Experience (www.sasksettlement.com) has combined nearly 3,000 archival records to provide a glimpse into the life and times of settlers who came to Saskatchewan with optimism and zeal to create a new agricultural society. The Saskatchewan Settlement Experience is a natural extension of the Saskatchewan Homestead Index Project (www.saskhomesteads.com), which was launched in October, 2005. Through the medium of digitized images and sounds, visitors to the website can learn about government immigration policy, settlement of the Canadian West, pioneer communities, education, spiritual life, diet, politics and more. Included in the website are close to 100 suggested teaching activities to encourage the use of archival records in schools. The website was funded in part by the Canadian Memory Fund through Library and Archives Canada. The official launch of the website will be held on September 14, 2006, and promotional information will be sent to all Saskatchewan schools.
