Saskatchewan Archives Holiday Hours for 2007 Reference Services of the Saskatchewan Archives in Saskatoon and Regina will be closed from Saturday, December 22, 2007 up to Tuesday, January 1, 2008, for the holiday season. Saskatchewan Archives Job Posting: MANAGER, HUMAN RESOURCES & ADMINISTRATION Reporting to the Provincial Archivist, the Manager of Human Resources & Administration manages the human resource function, working with HR, Finance in relation to the CBA, the financial management function, working with Payment Services, U of S, and other central administrative functions such as records management. As well, the Manager is a member of the Executive Management Committee which is charged with strategic and current planning in addition to developing global policy and reviewing recommendations and decisions of program managers and administrators. Saskatchewan Archives Summer Closures for 2007 There will be no Reference Services in the Saskatoon and Regina offices of Saskatchewan Archives on the following statutory and union holidays during the summer of 2007: Saskatchewan Archives Closed February 19, 2007, for Family Day The Saskatoon and Regina offices of Saskatchewan Archives will be closed on Monday, February 19, 2007, for the Family Day statutory holiday. VICTORIA CROSS ON DISPLAY AT THE MELVILLE BRANCH OF THE CANADIAN LEGION The Saskatchewan Archives is pleased to announce a special Remembrance Day display dedicated to those who responded to their country's need at a time of war. The display will feature a tribute to Lieut. Robert Grierson Combe who was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously in 1917. NEW PROVINCIAL ARCHIVIST ANNOUNCED Today, the Saskatchewan Archives Board introduced Don Herperger as Saskatchewan's new Provincial Archivist. The announcement was made after an exhaustive national search assisted by a Saskatoon-based executive recruitment firm. NEW WEBSITE BRINGS SASKATCHEWAN SETTLEMENT EXPERIENCE TO LIFE The Saskatchewan Archives Board and the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society are launching a new website that allows people from around the globe to experience the joys and sorrows of Saskatchewan s first settlers. The Saskatchewan Settlement Experience Goes On-line The Saskatchewan Archives Board and the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society are pleased to announce a new partnership initiative that allows people from Saskatchewan and around the world to experience the joys and the sorrows of settlers who arrived in Saskatchewan between 1870 and 1930. The Saskatchewan Settlement Experience (www.sasksettlement.com) has combined nearly 3,000 archival records to provide a glimpse into the life and times of settlers who came to Saskatchewan with optimism and zeal to create a new agricultural society. Resignation of Trevor Powell as Provincial Archivist of Saskatchewan The Chair of the Saskatchewan Archives Board, Merrilee Rasmussen Q.C., announced today the resignation of Trevor Powell as Provincial Archivist of Saskatchewan effective March 31, 2006. Mr. Powell has worked for the Saskatchewan Archives for 33 years and close to 20 years as head of the institution. SASKATCHEWAN ARCHIVES DIRECTOR RETIRES After over thirty years of dedicated service to the Saskatchewan Archives Board, Historical Records Branch director, D'Arcy Hande, has taken early retirement, effective January 2006. LEGISLATIVE AMENDMENTS PASSED Amendments to The Archives Act, 2004 were passed by the Legislative Assembly on December 1, 2005, and given Royal Assent the following day. HOMESTEAD INFORMATION AVAILABLE ON THE WEB Saskatchewan Archives is launching a new online database where genealogists and researchers around the globe will, for the first time, have access to Saskatchewan's homestead information via the World Wide Web. The information is available online at www.saskhomesteads.com and may be purchased as a stand-alone, searchable CD-ROM. SASKATCHEWAN ARCHIVES ONLINE HOMESTEAD DATABASE Saskatchewan is the only province where the original homestead records are still available for public research. This is a major step forward in standardizing the description of archival materials and their creators by adapting and augmenting the nationally accepted Rules for Archival Description (RAD) within Saskatchewan Archives. Saskatchewan Homestead Index Project Appreciation Event The Saskatchewan Archives hosted an Appreciation Event on June 15, 2004 to show their gratitude and recognize the many individuals and organizations who are working diligently to get the Saskatchewan homestead index on line. It is hoped that the full index can be released in CD-ROM format and on the internet for Saskatchewan s provincial centennial in 2005. New archival legislation passed On June 17, Saskatchewan's new archival legislation was given Royal Assent and came into force. INDEX TO HOMESTEAD RECORDS TO GO ON-LINE IN 2005 Families researching their homesteading history, and communities preparing local history books will have an easier time of it once the Saskatchewan Homestead Index Project (SHIP) is completed in February 2005, in time for Saskatchewan s Centennial. REVISED ADMINISTRATIVE RECORDS SCHEDULE APPROVED The Saskatchewan Administrative Records System (SARS) has been superseded by the Administrative Records Management System (ARMS) as the standard classification system and retention schedule for Saskatchewan Government departments, boards, agencies and commissions. THREE ARCHIVES SALUTE LOUIS RIEL CanWest Global Communications Corp., the Library and Archives of Canada and the Saskatchewan Archives Board will reveal a new addition to Canada s documentary heritage at the Saskatchewan Archives on June 20, 2003. The new acquisition, recently obtained by the Ottawa Citizen archives, is a Letter to the Editor written by Louis Riel on November 9, 1885, seven days before his execution. New Prices Effective April 1, 2003 New prices for some goods and services at the Saskatchewan Archives will come into effective on April 1, 2003. 1906 Census of the Prairie Provinces The Saskatchewan Archives is pleased to announce that the 1906 census of the Prairie Provinces is now available for research in its Regina office. They anticipate that a second copy will also be available in its Saskatoon office within the next few weeks. Researchers are encouraged to visit either office to peruse the microfilm copy of these records. Archives in Your Attic In celebration of Heritage Week, the Saskatchewan Archives in Regina is holding its first annual Archives in Your Attic event on Saturday, February 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Reference and Reading Rooms.
