Our Services
Information Management
The Saskatchewan Archives provides records management services for the provincial government. The Information Management Section researches, develops and disseminates records/information management standards for government. It provides consultation service to government including advice on classification systems and electronic records management requirements. It manages the Administrative Records Management System (ARMS) which helps classify and control the disposition of all administrative records in the government. The Information Management Section also manages a system of record retention and disposal schedules for operational records (ORS - Operational Records Systems). Staff assist government institutions in the development of internal long-term strategies for the control of information including the identification of the legal, fiscal, and operational value of records. This process includes review by the Public Documents Committee and the Legislative Assembly, giving the public effective control over public documents.
Disposition Management
The Saskatchewan Archives, in order to ensure that government records are disposed of in an accountable manner, receives requests for the disposal of government records from government departments, boards, crowns and agencies as well as local governments and school boards and divisions. Each disposal request is reviewed to confirm that the records are related to the proper schedule and that the required retention periods have been met. If it is determined that the records are eligible for disposal, they are reviewed by an appraisal archivist. Those records that have continuing historical value are preserved by the Saskatchewan Archives.
Archival Management
The Archival Management Section is responsible for the management of those government records acquired by the Saskatchewan Archives Board for long term preservation. These records are arranged and described and finding aids are created so that the records are accessible to researchers. Specialized advice is provided by reference staff on government records in our holdings to assist both public and government researchers. Access to the majority of government records is restricted for a period of time and researchers must make a formal request for access to view these records. In each case the records are reviewed and a recommendation consistent with the requirements of The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act is forwarded to the Provincial Archivist for final determination.
